What to Expect

Li-ion batteries are projected to make up 98% of the 4.5-TWh battery market by 2030. Traditionally, the focus of innovation for improving battery performance has been on cathodes, but improving the anode is necessary to support high-potential cathodes while contributing to cell improvement. Current batteries use graphite, which offers good conductivity, chemical stability, and a wide temperature range — but its specific capacity limits improvements in energy density. In this Ideathon, we will explore innovations and challenges in anode technology, including Li-metal and silicon-anode process design, and showcase developers’ innovative anode technologies, their progress, and the market’s future.

As companies consider ways to improve battery performance, Lux’s Ideathon on novel anode technologies will answer the following questions:

  • What are the types of novel anode technologies?
  • Which technologies can deliver higher-value output (specific energy/cycle life/efficiency) while reducing weight and total material use?
  • How will new manufacturing processes and components open avenues for the industry and change incumbent manufacturing practices?
