What to Expect
Li-ion today is the dominant form of storage being added to the grid, spurred by rising amounts of intermittent and variable renewable power to the grid and enabled by significant cost reductions in the last decade. As the share of renewable power generation rises in the grid mix, more long-duration storage may be needed to provide capacity during stretches of inevitable lower-than-expected power output. Typically, Li-ion systems are designed to provide four hours of storage, but are other chemistries emerging that can provide lower-cost storage for days, weeks, or even months at a time?
