What to Expect

As part of their decarbonization and defossilization strategies, oil and gas and chemicals companies are looking to utilize biomass resources to produce alternative fuels and/or “green” chemicals. Currently, corn and sugarcane feedstocks are primarily being used, driving concerns about competition with food use. Companies are looking to avoid the negative environmental and social consequences of using such first-generation resources by utilizing biomass stocks like agricultural waste and forestry residues. Moreover, the conversion of waste and forestry inputs could help lower production costs and let producers use a wider range of inputs. In this Lux Ideathon, we’ll look at emerging innovations to convert a range of biomass into usable components or directly into base chemicals and/or fuels, showcasing innovative technology developers across biomass conversion.

As companies work to build their strategies, Lux’s Ideathon on biomass conversion will cover the following topics:

  • What are the promising technologies for valorizing biomass like agricultural waste and forestry residues?
  • What regulatory incentives are driving interest in second- and later-generation biomass streams?
  • What are some viable strategies for overcoming supply chain challenges?
