What to Expect
Two-dimensional materials are atomically thin materials whose structures can enable unusual electrical, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties. These capabilities create opportunities across semiconductors, energy storage, separations, sensing, photonics, and thermal management, but graphene’s uneven commercialization history demonstrates that exceptional material properties do not automatically translate into scalable products or attractive investment opportunities.
In this Ideathon, Lux examines startups commercializing graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, 2D insulators, and MXenes. We will explore where these materials can meaningfully overcome the limitations of incumbent technologies, how commercialization strategies are evolving beyond broad platform claims, and which applications, partnerships, and technical milestones could enable the next generation of 2D materials to progress from academic innovation to commercial adoption.
