About the Event

Corporate innovation leaders recognize that most transformational innovations, initiated now, will likely bear fruit only in the next decade. As leaders develop innovation strategies and roadmaps, they are wondering whether the right bets with ecosystem partners can pave the way toward those transformations. Lux Research is bringing innovation leaders to the home of nimble companies — Silicon Valley — to discuss how ecosystem-first thinking can help place the right bets that, in turn, inform go-forward innovation priorities.

This invitation-only opportunity offers:

  • Exclusive gathering to tackle big challenges in innovation-related decision making — complimentary for Lux clients.
  • Invitation-only event for C-level leaders within large, global companies in adjacent industries.
  • Peer-group learning, contributing, and networking around critical leadership issues.
  • Confidential, safe space for CTOs, CIOs, CSOs, and CEOs to engage in open, intellectual dialogue — guided by Lux and molded by the leaders in the Roundtable.
  • Actionable takeaways, including frameworks and follow-on conversations.

Leadership Challenge: Bridging the Now and the Future

Lux hypothesizes that the chasm between merely incremental innovation and truly transformational innovation can be bridged once large companies begin exploring what a well-constructed external ecosystem could deliver in the transition toward transformation.

  • If that is true, could startups, incubators, and academia be actively configured as transitional innovation bets that create optionality within corporate innovation portfolios?
  • Are there ways to engage the external ecosystem — in addition to traditional approaches like venturing and acquisitions — to build a robust portfolio of bets?
1:15pm – 2:15pm

Potential Avenues: Focus on Frameworks

Many companies still engage the external ecosystem only opportunistically and select ecosystem partners individually and not as components of a thoughtful portfolio.

  • What frameworks do you use to sequentially select the best ecosystem partners and associated mechanisms (e.g., JVs, contract research, tech transfer, etc.) that enable your transition toward transformation?
  • Reciprocally, how are these choices informing your construction of internal R&D programs?

2:30pm – 3:30pm

Critical Inputs/Outputs: Talent and Success

Innovation leaders consistently report a deficit in the right high-skilled talent that can drive transitional innovation.

  • How can talent within the external ecosystem expand your ability to innovate — for example, via sponsored research, grand challenge contests, etc.?
  • Beyond gains in R&D productivity, speed to market, and breadth of outcomes, does the percolation of AI/ML within the organization fundamentally evolve your talent strategy or how your talent pursues transitional innovation?
3:30pm – 3:45pm

Taking Action: Three Questions

  • What is the biggest learning from today’s discussion, and how will you operationalize it within your own organization?
  • What questions remain in your mind about the ideas, challenges, and solutions we discussed today?
  • What would you suggest as topic/agenda for our next Executive Roundtable?
