The rise of distributed energy resources (DERs) located behind the meter (BTM) presents an opportunity to monetize electricity and energy flexibility provided by these assets. This report identifies four key archetypes that can be used to monetize BTM DERs, leveraging asset capabilities to participate in different services, creating new revenue streams for DER owners, and enabling utilities to coordinate infrastructure upgrades and manage power grid fluctuations.
While DER marketplaces still require regulatory support for successful deployment, they offer the best solution for DER owners and distribution utilities or energy service providers (ESPs). In contrast, peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading shows less traction and limited applications. Virtual power plants (VPPs) and community energy sharing, which use similar approaches and fit with current regulations, are well established in the market. Once DER markets are fully enabled, VPP aggregators will be active participants.
