Taking Flight: The Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuels
Aviation has evolved from a fantastical vision shared by a few “crazy inventors” to an indispensable global industry. This transformation began with the Wright brothers’ pioneering flight in Kittyhawk, North Carolina in 1903, a modest but historic flight that lasted merely 12 seconds and spanned 120 meters. This event marked the inception of flight and set the stage for modern transportation.
However, the growth of the aviation sector has brought with it substantial environmental challenges. As we stand over a century later at another pivotal moment, the industry faces the pressing need to drastically reduce its carbon footprint. Recognizing this, over 300 airlines under the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
This e-book delves into the sustainable transformation of aviation, focusing on the role of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and other innovative technologies such as electric and hydrogen aviation. It will cover the technological pathways exploring electric, hydrogen, and SAF, as well as the factors influencing adoption. It will also discuss the strategic commitments by major players like United Airlines towards achieving net zero emissions.
