Technical and business due diligence of a high momentum cannabinoid and medicinal mushroom CPG startup
Challenge
A major CPG company saw growing momentum in cannabinoid-and medicinal mushroom-based CPG products globally and recruited Lux’s support to conduct a technical and business due diligence on a company target for acquisition to diversify its portfolio.
Approach
The Lux team built a competitive landscape of companies with similar technology solutions to evaluate the differentiation of the target company within the market. Lux scored each company based on product strength and business potential to identify the companies posing the greatest threat to the target company. Lux conducted in-depth analysis of the target company patent, product portfolio, manufacturing, and research capabilities, in parallel to interviewing the target company’s leadership team to reveal further insights and potential unforeseen risks.

Lux’s in-depth evaluation provided the client with concrete evidence to hold off on pursuing the acquisition until the target company proves commercial potential and publishes science-backed efficacy results.
A partner search and selection for a major oil and gas company in the carbon capture space
Challenge
An oil and gas multinational corporation wished to explore opportunities in key carbon-negative technologies and thus wanted to strengthen its understanding of the developer landscape for direct air capture (DAC), bioenergy with carbon capture (BECCS), and direct ocean capture (DOC). It required Lux’s expertise to identify and prioritize best-in-class developers across the mentioned areas.
Approach
Lux screened companies across its proprietary and third-party databases to identify DAC, BECCS, and DOC developers and identified 80 companies across the three spaces. Lux created a database capturing relevant company, technology, and deployment information for each developer, analyzing trends based on the target technologies, funding received, and partnerships, among others. Lux then assessed developers on their technical potential and fit with the client. Finally, Lux created a deep-dive profile of the 10 developers that the client should deem as leaders across the three areas.

Develop well-founded hypothesis for 3 companies as an aggregate entity for accelerated growth in the EV- battery and other markets
Objective
The Client, a platform technology company engaged in developing materials that can wield segments of the electromagnetic spectrum to fulfill sensing and imaging functions, wanted to understand the landscape of lithium-ion battery materials for the energy storage market, and whether 3 companies possess the necessary capabilities for the Client to enter the EV battery market.
Solution
First, Lux analyzed the trends in the lithium-ion battery market. In a second step, Lux created a landscape of materials used in the production of lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries.
Next, Lux created technology landscapes for the technologies developed by the three companies and assessed their capabilities to enter or grow in the EV battery market. Lux also assessed opportunities for these companies in markets other than the energy storage market.

Based on Lux’s analysis and recommendations the Client has decided to proceed with the acquisition of one of the start-ups. Because Lux Research has helped the Client to gain a better understanding of the Li-ion market, the technology landscape relative to the other two companies, and their strengths and weaknesses, the Client will proceed with the acquisition process with the other two companies with a significantly improved knowledge of the opportunities for these companies.
